About Hand to God

Hand to God is a dark comedy play by Robert Askins that explores the fragile nature of faith, morality, and the bonds that connect people. The play is set in Cypress, Texas, a small, religious town where a shy teenager named Jason finds an outlet for his creativity at the local Christian Puppet Ministry. Jason's hand puppet, Tyrone, is initially soft-spoken, but gradually takes on a shockingly irreverent personality and begins to influence Jason. The play explores themes such as death, depression, alcoholism, sexual guilt, emotional repression, and religious hypocrisy.

The play also features a widowed mother named Margery, who runs the puppet club at the church to keep herself occupied after her husband's death. The club's other members include Jessica, Jason's crush, and Timmy, a neighborhood troublemaker. Pastor Greg, the minister, wants the club to perform at the church on the following Sunday.

Some interpretations of the play suggest that Jason is actually possessed, while others suggest that Tyrone is the alter ego of a boy who is struggling to process his father's death. The play also illustrates the instability of defined roles, as the characters all become puppeteers who manipulate the behavior of others.

Some say that Hand to God is "furiously funny" and that Askins' talent is his ability to make people laugh while exploring difficult themes. Others say that the play's psychological depths mirror the unsettling times of society, especially for struggling young people. However, some also note that the play contains violence, sex, and foul language, as well as realistic-looking stage blood and gore.
