The Sound of Music is inspired by the true story of Maria von Trapp, a spirited young woman studying to become a nun at Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg, Austria. Sent to work as governess for the seven children of widowed naval captain Georg von Trapp, Maria brings music, warmth, and joy back into the household. As the family grows closer through song, Maria and the Captain fall in love—but their happiness is threatened as Nazi Germany annexes Austria, forcing the family to make a courageous decision that will change their lives forever.

The real von Trapp family did become a famous singing group, touring throughout Europe and eventually settling in Vermont after fleeing Austria in 1938. Maria later wrote a memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, which became a bestseller and inspired filmmakers and theater artists alike. Broadway legends Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II transformed the story into a stage musical that opened in 1959, winning five Tony Awards®, including Best Musical.

The beloved 1965 film starring Julie Andrews went on to win five Academy Awards®, including Best Picture, and remains one of the most successful movie musicals of all time. Today, The Sound of Music continues to be performed around the world, cherished for its unforgettable songs, rich characters, and timeless themes of love, courage, and the power of music to bring people together.
