Dr. Bettsy Curtis
Bettsy Curtis directs musical theatre at UNCW. She will be the music director for the theatre/dance and music departments performance of the Broadway musical "Head Over Heels" with music by The Go-Go's from November 14-24. She also composes musical theatre and launched UNCW's annual production of her musicals for the New Hanover County public schools. Her degrees are in piano performance: Bachelor of Music from Southern Methodist University, Master of Music from the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Texas at Austin. Teaching positions include: Baylor University, Howard Payne University, and the University of Texas at San Antonio. She stepped away from academia for about fifteen years to raise her two children and turned to public school music teaching in Texas and North Carolina. Her last elementary position was at Camp Lejeune's Johnson Primary school when it first opened in 2005. Curtis holds a Level Two Orff-Schulwerk Certification, wrote several Orff-based children’s musicals, and attended several Orff-Schulwerk national conventions where she attended workshops in West African drumming. Since 1996 she has been an active clinician, teacher, and performer of West African drumming. During her tenure with the Vance County schools, she wrote numerous arts grants, which brought in West African drummers for specialized workshops in drumming and dancing, and a performance with the Chuck Davis African American Dance Ensemble. In 2008 the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries sent her to Ivory Coast, Africa where she taught keyboard improvisation, piano, conducting, and theory to future worship leaders. Bettsy is excited to be playing "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown". She grew up listening to all the musical numbers on an old LP record. Who knows......"Charlie Brown" may have been the reason she fell in love with musical theatre where it remains her most cherished musical genre!
