Writer
Evan T. Pritchard
PICTURE - "Evan Pritchard (Abachbahametch) near Constitution Island, NY" Evan Pritchard, a descendant of Celtic and Algonquin peoples, is the author of over fifty critically acclaimed books on Native American culture and history, most notably Native New Yorkers. In addition, he is a respected composer of several hundred songs and orchestral musical works who graduated with honors from Catholic University in music composition, and whose Second Sonata for guitar was premiered at Lincoln Center by David Leisner. This new musical play, created in collaboration with violinist Daisy Jopling, combines many of his interests. His father was a Washington-like military figure who played a significant role in World War II and the Cold War, and his mother was a homespun philosopher in the Eastern Woodlands tradition. This Nimham-Washington Legacy honors them both equally. Having acted in several prominent off-Broadway roles, he has written several plays, including his current run as “Clovis Flint, the 11,000-Year-Old Man,” and his “The Three Sisters (and the Dead Fish!).” He serves as the director of Tribal Harmony, an ongoing effort that has featured notable showcases at the Falcon Jazz Club and many Croton Clearwater Revivals, with Grammy and NAMA-winning guest stars like Joanne Shenandoah and Joseph Fire Crow. This new historical narrative reflects Pritchard’s decades as a lecturer on Native American history at Vassar, Pace, and Marist is also shaped by the author’s decades as an interfaith minister, with its themes of forgiveness and reconciliation extending into the afterlife. As a public speaker, including talks at nearly all of Putnam County’s nineteen Daniel Nimham Powwows) Pritchard has always taken a special interest in the local descendants of the Wappingers people, many of whom, like himself, are patriotic American citizens who continue to honor their ancestors in private ways. Happy 250th!
