Jesus Hopped The A Train Cast
Habibi Rodriguez (Angel Cruz)
Angel Cruz is a volatile, street-wise inmate awaiting trial on Rikers Island after shooting a cult leader he believed who coerced his friend, Joey. Beneath his tough exterior is a man tormented by guilt, faith, and the desperate need to believe his actions had meaning. Throughout the play, Angel struggles with redemption, sanity, and whether God can forgive someone the world has already condemned.
Steph Gilston (Mary Jane Hanrahan )
Mary Jane Hanrahan is Angel Cruz’s sharp, overworked public defender. She fights relentlessly within a flawed legal system to defend her client, even as she struggles with the emotional weight and moral compromises of her job. Beneath her hardened professionalism lies a deep frustration with a justice system that often feels stacked against the very people she’s trying to help.
Apollo Lavezzari (Valdez)
Valdez is a hardened corrections officer at Rikers Island. Blunt, impatient, and openly prejudiced, he represents the harsh, dehumanizing side of the prison system, often clashing with inmates and exposing the power imbalance between guards and those in custody.
Tim Reid (D'Amico)
D'Amico is a seasoned corrections officer at Rikers Island who supervises the inmates awaiting trial. Calm, observant, and quietly authoritative, he maintains order in a tense environment while revealing moments of unexpected humanity and humor. D'Amico often serves as a grounded presence amid the volatile conflicts between the prisoners.
Juan Loney (Lucius Jenkins )
Lucius Jenkins is a charismatic, deeply religious inmate on death row who believes he has been redeemed by God despite his violent past. Intelligent, philosophical, and unsettlingly calm, he challenges everyone around him—especially Angel Cruz—to confront questions of faith, forgiveness, and whether true salvation is possible.
