About The Sound of Music
The final and most beloved collaboration between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, "The Sound of Music" has enchanted audiences around the world for over 65 years. Set in Austria on the eve of the Nazi annexation in 1938, the musical tells the story of the irrepressible Maria, a postulant at a Salzburg convent sent to serve as governess to the seven children of the widowed, stern Captain Georg von Trapp.
Maria transforms the household with her warmth, music, and irresistible spirit, winning over the children and, inevitably, their father. But as the political world closes in and Captain von Trapp is ordered to serve in the German Navy, the family must make a daring choice: comply, or flee over the mountains to freedom.
"The Sound of Music" features some of the most celebrated songs in musical theater history, including "Do-Re-Mi," "My Favorite Things," "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "Edelweiss," and the soaring title song. The original Broadway production won five Tony Awards in 1960, and the 1965 film adaptation starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. A show that lifts the spirit and touches the soul, a true classic for all ages.
