About Proof

Catherine’s father, Robert, a mathematical genius in his fifties and professor at the University of Chicago, has recently died from a serious mental illness. Catherine cared for her father for several years through his lengthy illness, forgoing her own education. Now his ex-graduate student, Hal, is going through Robert’s papers and has discovers a paradigm-shifting proof about prime numbers. Questions arise as to the author of this proof. The play explores Catherine's fear of following in her father's footsteps as well as being recognized for her own mathematical ability. Amidst her desperate attempts to stay in control is her decision to go to New York as her older sister, Claire, wants or stay in Chicago.
