About Memphis

Memphis the Musical is a vibrant, high-energy production that tells the story of the birth of rock 'n' roll in the segregated American South during the 1950s. The musical follows Huey Calhoun, a white radio DJ with a passion for African-American music, and Felicia Farrell, a talented Black singer with dreams of stardom. As Huey starts playing Felicia’s music on his radio show, he challenges the racial boundaries of the time, bringing Black music to a wider audience. Their shared love of music brings them together, but as they begin a romantic relationship, they face prejudice and societal pressures that threaten to tear them apart.

Set against the backdrop of Memphis, Tennessee, the musical explores themes of racial tension, the power of music to bring people together, and the cost of following one's dreams. With a score that blends rock 'n' roll, gospel, and blues, Memphis the Musical is both a celebration of the transformative power of music and a poignant reflection on the struggle for racial equality. As Huey and Felicia fight for their love and their music, they inspire others to stand up for what they believe in, making Memphis a powerful, moving, and unforgettable theatrical experience.

RiverTowne Players

RiverTowne Players is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to enriching and entertaining the residents of Eastern North Carolina by providing high-quality theatre. Our mission is to offer a platform for local actors, musicians, and artists to showcase their talents.

We are proud to call the historic Masonic Theatre our home. Originally opened in 1805, the Masonic Theatre was once the cultural heart of New Bern, hosting stage plays, talent benefits, concerts, and vaudeville acts. During the Civil War, it served as a Confederate arsenal and later as a hospital for Union soldiers. In 1917, it was converted into a motion picture theater, operating continuously until 1974, making it the nation's oldest continually operating theatre until its closure.

Today, the Masonic Theatre has been lovingly restored to its original purpose of live entertainment. Visitors can experience the unique ambiance of the oldest working theatre in the United States while enjoying a RiverTowne Players production.
