About Blithe Spirit

Blithe Spirit is a classic comedy by renowned playwright Noël Coward. First performed in 1941, this enduringly popular play is known for its wit, humor, and supernatural intrigue. The story centers around novelist Charles Condomine, who invites the eccentric medium Madame Arcati to conduct a séance at his home as research for his next book. To his surprise, the séance inadvertently summons the ghost of his late wife, Elvira, who is determined to disrupt his current marriage to his new wife, Ruth.

As the spirited Elvira creates chaos and mischief, Charles and Ruth must navigate the hilarious complications that arise from having a ghost in their midst. With sharp dialogue, clever plot twists, and a charmingly quirky cast of characters, Blithe Spirit explores themes of love, marriage, and the afterlife in Coward’s inimitable style.

We are proud to call the historic Masonic Theatre our home. Originally opened in 1805, the Masonic Theatre was once the cultural heart of New Bern, hosting stage plays, talent benefits, concerts, and vaudeville acts. During the Civil War, it served as a Confederate arsenal and later as a hospital for Union soldiers. In 1917, it was converted into a motion picture theater, operating continuously until 1974, making it the nation's oldest continually operating theatre until its closure.

Today, the Masonic Theatre has been lovingly restored to its original purpose of live entertainment. Visitors can experience the unique ambiance of the oldest working theatre in the United States while enjoying a RiverTowne Players production.
