About The Laramie Project
The Laramie Project is a powerful, dramatic collage taken directly from interviews conducted by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Company during their six visits to Laramie, Wyoming in the wake of the 1998 murder of gay college student, Matthew Shepard. Through firsthand sources, this deeply moving piece details the true story of a small American town and its response to a fatal tragedy that sparked national controversy.
The voices of neighbors, friends, clergy members, law enforcement officers, and other residents paint a moving portrait of a community facing difficult questions while striving to hold onto its shared values. Filled with moments of heartbreak, humor, and hope, The Laramie Project is a story about the resilience of ordinary people and the importance of empathy, dignity, and human connection.
