About A Fairy, A Gnome and a Warforged Kill Varya Ranyevskaya From 'The Cherry Orchard': A D&D Play
Inspired by an actual game of Dungeons & Dragons, this solo performance follows a Dungeon Master wrestling with his own imagination. To find inspiration, he dives into a copy of Anton Chekhov’s final play “The Cherry Orchard” and converts the classic Russian story into a fantastical epic of family conspiracies and lofty ambition, fully portraying every character on his own. "A Fairy, a Gnome and a Warforged Kill Varya Ranyevskaya From 'The Cherry Orchard'" is half an adaptation of the source material, half a reflection on storytelling, and all-around a celebration of where imagination comes from and how it is used.
Why did you submit your show to the Omaha Fringe Festival?
This solo show was the culmination of my MFA thesis researching how I can use my love of D&D effectively as an actor. Since my master's program and the original performance was in the UK, I'm so thrilled to be returning home to share my work with the theatre community that means the most to me!
What are you hoping audiences will take away from the performance?
What I'm really proud of with this show is that the audience doesn't need to know anything about Dungeons & Dragons or 'The Cherry Orchard' to get something out of this show. Ultimately, I want audiences to walk away with a deeper appreciation for their own imagination. The environments we grow up in, the stories we're exposed to and the people we share all our moments with are what fuel our creativity – we all have that, and it's not something magic that comes from thin air.
