About The Pliant Girls

In the fall, Theatre Prometheus will partner with Nu Sass Productions to produce Meghan Brown’s The Pliant Girls. This event marks Theatre Prometheus’s first ever coproduction, and a celebration of Nu Sass's 15th year producing in DC. We are both equally honored to work with a company that shares our values and echoes our own mission to make space for marginalized groups in theatre. We are especially excited to be able to share this timely play together as both our companies celebrate landmark anniversaries (Theatre Prometheus’s 10th season and Nu Sass’s 15th season).

Winner of the 2014 Ovation Award for Playwriting of an Original Play, The Pliant Girls is an adaptation(ish) of Aeschylus’s The Suppliants. Fifty blood-stained brides seek refuge after murdering their husbands on their wedding night, but no one's eager to take them in. As Kay, Leta, Arianna, Courtney, and Philomena beg for their lives, their stories form a complex tapestry of contemporary sisterhood… and provide insight into the deaths of the men who stood in their way.

Combining humor, heart, and a healthy dose of rage, The Pliant Girls is a sharply insightful exploration of love, sisterhood, and reclaiming the power to make your own choices.

Nu Sass Productions & Theatre Prometheus

Nu Sass has been supporting marginalized genders in the DC region since 2009.

Nu Sass Productions strives to encourage marginalized genders in all aspects of theater, especially in those roles traditionally dominated by cis-men. Nu Sass explores how disregarding prescribed genders can change the overall experience for the audience. Above all, Nu Sass aims to create engaging, thought-provoking art while being a responsible local and global citizen.

Nu Sass Productions was founded by Aubri O’Connor and Emily Todd in 2009.

Theatre Prometheus was founded in 2013 by a group of local artists, including Joanna Cross and current Artistic Director Tracey Erbacher.

Theatre Prometheus is a not-for-profit company producing classic and new works in Washington, D.C. We share a goal of exploring and promoting feminist, queer, and diverse narratives. We believe in the power of local theater and are committed to providing opportunities to local artists and creating productions by and for the communities we live in.
