About Reflection : Response Commission 2024

Terry Beck

Alumni choreographer Terry Beck, BYR '79 presents an evening of work with an illustrious cast, including Temple Dance alumni and many of his contemporaries from the Philadelphia dance scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

This performance will kick-off a year of special events and activities to celebrate the Dance Department's 50th Anniversary.

Friday's show includes an official launch of the Anniversary followed by a post-show reception with the performers.

The Reflection:Response Commission invites choreographers to consider as a starting point how we ‘reflect’ and ‘respond’ through different kinds of embodiment: the experiential body, the choreographic body and the activist body.  It includes a cash award and access to rehearsal space at Temple University throughout summer 2024.  Past commission recipients include Laura Peterson, Charles O. Anderson, Tatyana Tennenbaum, Jennifer Weber, Kathy Westwater, Lela Aisha Jones|Flyground, Awilda Sterling-Duprey, Marion Ramírez, Mark Wong (Metal) and Mei-Yin Ng.

Program:

  • Improvisation - performed by Terry Beck and composer David Rudge
  • DIG -  a duet of loss, longing and unwavering search
  • Harbour -  a group piece about the passage of time

The Dance Department at Temple University is committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship and artistic practice. Understanding that we experience life through our bodies, our programs encourage students to consider how minds in motion contribute to knowledge, transform the social world, and facilitate community engagement.

A founding member of the National Association of Schools of Dance, Boyer's Dance Department has provided a multi-layered creative, reflective, and inclusive dance learning environment for over fifty years. We continue to honor traditions while exploring new ways of knowing dance.
