Buckhannon Community Theatre: A Legacy of Artistic Excellence
Buckhannon Community Theatre (BCT) has been a vibrant cornerstone of the arts in Buckhannon, WV, since its inception in the early 1970s. Its history reflects the passion and dedication of a community united by a love for the performing arts.

The Beginnings: A Student-Led Dream
BCT was spawned by the efforts of Buckhannon-Upshur High School students and their vocal music teacher and choir director, James Knorr. The theatre took to the stage for the first time in 1971 with a summer production aimed at continuing the tradition of musical theater beyond the school year. The initiative was an immediate success, drawing people of all ages and backgrounds to become actors, singers, dancers, directors, stagehands, and costumers. Together, they created a “Broadway-style” show that delighted the community and planted the seeds for a thriving theatre tradition.
From Grassroots to Non-Profit
In 1972, Buckhannon Community Theatre officially became a chartered non-profit organization. The group developed and adopted its first set of by-laws and held its inaugural election of officers, including executive board members, drawn from its general membership. This formal structure laid the foundation for the theatre's continued growth and sustainability.
Expanding the Stage
Initially focused on summer productions, BCT soon expanded its offerings to include performances throughout the year. This evolution allowed the theatre to engage the community more consistently and showcase a broader repertoire of musicals, plays, and children’s productions.
Notable Productions and Milestones
Over the decades, BCT has brought a wide range of beloved shows to life, including The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, and The Music Man. These productions have demonstrated not only the exceptional talents of local performers but also the dedication of countless volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes.
Community and Educational Impact
BCT has always prioritized community engagement, creating opportunities for individuals of all ages and skill levels to participate in the theatrical process. Through workshops and educational programs, the theatre has also nurtured the next generation of performers and stage technicians, inspiring many to pursue careers in the arts.
A Legacy of Inclusion and Excellence
Today, BCT remains a vital part of Buckhannon’s cultural identity. Its commitment to inclusivity, artistic excellence, and community involvement ensures that it continues to enrich the lives of residents and visitors alike.
As BCT celebrates its rich history and looks toward the future, its mission remains steadfast in providing high-quality, accessible theatre experiences for all.
